About the Australian AI Monitor

Purpose

The Australian AI Monitor documents Australia’s AI ecosystem across twelve layers of the AI stack. It examines the capabilities being developed in Australia and the foreign technology on which they depend.

The research follows how investment and policy decisions affect Australia’s access to AI and control over its use. It also examines whether building infrastructure in Australia makes foreign firms more dependent on Australian resources, and what influence this could give Australia over the terms of their operations.

The database covers selected projects and organisations. Its records support policy and industry research, including comparisons with other countries.

How we use the evidence

• Projects are labelled by their reported stage of development, with announced projects listed separately from operating assets.
• Ownership is recorded separately from the location of an asset.
• Claims about Australian access to compute require evidence of who can use it and on what terms.
• Models developed through multinational collaborations are identified as such.
• Hardware records retain their observation dates. Older configurations are excluded from current inventory totals.
